The Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Flagship food hall, Fodder, has been singled out as the best independent retailer in Yorkshire, at last night’s Deliciouslyorkshire Awards . The award winning food hall, which opened in June, wins the award shortly after being named in the top 10 of Britain’s best butchers. All the profits from this impressive shop are ploughed back to the local farming community, and it thought to be the country’s first fully charitable food retailer.
Managing director Heather Parry said, “I’m thrilled to win after just five months. Our commitment to supporting the local farming community, the great local produce and the fresh and contemporary look of Fodder really seem to have struck a chord. Credit must go to the terrific staff whose hard work and enthusiasm for Yorkshire food and drink is infectious.”
Fodder stocks everything you might need in a weekly shop, locally milled flour and muesli from Driffield, farmfresh eggs travelling just 6 miles to store, sausages made on site from locally reared pork, fresh seasonal vegetables from the Vale of York, artisan produced butter and local milk from the UK’s smallest dairy in Calderdale, and smoked meats and fish from the edge of the Dales. Fodder aims to encourage shoppers to shop local not just for special occasions, but for the weekly shop. 85% of the produce at Fodder comes from Yorkshire and the Humber and the shop supports over 165 farmers and producers in the region.
Miss Parry continues “This a great win for Fodder, but the real winners are Yorkshire’s producers and farmers. I hope Fodder’s continued success will make an appreciable difference to Yorkshire’s rural economy. All our profits will be ploughed back into resources to benefit Yorkshire Farmers, not many food retailers can boast such a claim.”
